Abstract:

Background and Aim: Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease of hair follicle. Osteopontin is an early T lymphocyte activator that may play a role in some immunological diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum level of osteopontin in patients with alopecia areata and compare it with the level in normal subjects.   Methods: 54 patients with alopecia areata who presented to the Razi Hospital in Tehran in 2017 and 2018 were enrolled. Half of the patients had severe disease and half of them had mild disease. Also, 52 healthy subjects were selected as control group (age and sex matched). The severity of disease was determined using SALT Score. Serum osteopontin levels were measured by ELISA method.   Results: The results showed that serum osteopontin levels were significantly higher in patients with alopecia areata than healthy subjects. There was no significant relationship between osteopontin level and SALT score or duration of the disease.   Conclusion: The level of osteopontin is higher in AA patients than normal subjects but it does not correlate with the severity of disease.

The Serum C-reactive Protein and Prooxidant-antioxidant Balance in Patients with Esophageal Cancer Compared to Healthy Subjects

Introduction: The molecular mechanisms involved in pathogenesis of esophageal cancer have been the main concern of several studies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes of serum prooxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) value as a redox index, as well as serum C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to healthy control group. Materials and Methods: In a cross-sectional study, blood samples we...

Serum Vitamin D in patients with alopecia areata

BACKGROUND Alopecia areata (AA) is a common, recurrent, autoimmune hair disorder. It has been found that vitamin D deficiency is associated with many autoimmune diseases. AIMS The current study aimed to estimate serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in patients with AA. MATERIALS AND METHODS This case-control study included 60 patients with AA and 60 age, gender, skin phototype, and body mas...

Body Composition in Healthy Obese/Overweight and Normal Weight Subjects Compared to Patients with Metabolic Syndrome

Background: According to previous studies, patient with metabolic syndrome (MetS) are different in terms of body composition from healthy subjects. The purpose of the present study was to determine the body composition of healthy obese/overweight patients and compared them with those having MetS. Methods: A case-control study was conducted on both men and women aged 20 to 55 years, who were sel...

Evaluation of rs37464444 Polymorphism of miR-499 Gene in Patients with Colon Cancer Compared with Healthy Subjects

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been introduced as a new genomic source for cancer. Therefore, it was decided to conduct a study to evaluate the rs3746444 polymorphism of miR-499 in patients with colon cancer in comparison with healthy subjects. Methods: This case-control study was conducted to investigate rs3746444 polymorphism of miR-...

Evaluation of serum iron and ferritin levels in alopecia areata.

Although immunologic processes and hereditary factors are suggested to play an important role in alopecia areata, the specific etiology is unclear. Iron deficiency has been suggested to play a role, but its effect is controversial. In our case control study, we found a higher mean level of serum iron and ferritin and a lower mean level of TIBC in patients compared to control subjects, but the d...
